Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” is the last day of the Carnival season as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
Mardi Gras has long been a time of extravagant fun for European Christians. In fact, some people think Mardi Gras celebrations have their source in the wild springtime orgies of the ancient Romans.
Purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power are the official colors of Mardi Gras.
Mardi Gras 2014 falls on Tuesday, March 4.
